Why Grilling is the Ultimate Form of Convenience Cooking

For most of us, the idea of grilling runs hand-in-hand with warm, lazy summer weekends, picnics, parks, watermelon slices, fudge brownies and lemonade.

Very rarely do we think about it as a way to whip up healthy, tasty dishes when we’re in a rush.

But in reality, that’s exactly what it can be!

Grilling makes dinners quick and easy when we get home from work and can make eating healthy more doable (hello shish-kabobs!). Plus, foods hot off the grill have their own special taste, that smoky goodness that permeates through every bite can make healthy eating even more enjoyable.

Here are 8 time-saving grilling tips to help you use the grill efficiently and make quick, healthy meals that taste delicious.

Grilling Tips1. Clean your grill ahead of time.

Heat it up, then scrub it with a grill brush before AND after cooking food.

Extra Time-Saver Tip:

It’s been sitting around, gathering who-knows-what all winter long, so cleaning your grill is especially important before firing it for your first summer cooking. One good scrub the weekend before you plan on using it makes before-dinner scrubs much quicker.

2. Marinating is your friend.

It gives food that extra punch of flavor.

Grilling TipTime-Saver Tip:

Place lean meats in a bag and put them in the fridge before leaving for work for the day. When you get home, they’re all set and ready for you to pop out and toss on the grill.

3. Know when to flip.

Use the tongs to give meat a gentle tug. When it comes loose easily, it’s ready to be flipped. For vegetables, flip every few minutes until tender.

Time-Saver Tip:

As soon as you put your meats and/or veggies on the grill, head back in the house and get to prepping the side dishes or setting the table, keeping a close eye on the clock. When a few minutes has passed, pop back outside to test the meat to see if it’s ready to be flipped. If you’re cooking veggies, flip them right then and there, and then head back inside to maximize time-use.

4. Use lean, thin-cut protein.

Lean protein has less fat, which reduces the amount of dripping you get off the grill and reduces flare-ups, those pesky things that char meat and can build up carcinogens. (Carcinogens are substances capable of causing cancers. Not grilling properly has been linked to carcinogen build-up.)

Time-Saver Tip:

When shopping, always look for thin-cut meats (pork chops, chicken, fish) with as little fat as possible. The exception is steak, mainly just because most steaks are better when they’re thick and juicy, but do trim the fat off before slapping them on the grill.

5. Beware of the burger.

Burgers are tricky. They need to be cooked to 160 degrees to ensure all the E. Coli bacteria is killed, which is best done by flipping the burger patty every 30-60 seconds.

Time-Saver Tip:

Ok, so you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to flip the patty every 30 seconds. You can just slap them on, but to minimize the leftover E. Coli, use lean patties…and always use a meat thermometer to make sure they’re fully cooked. And to make sure the burger patties are level when they cook (who wants the toppings all falling off?!), press your thumb in the middle of the meat before popping them on the grill to make a small indentation. This will help the meat, which can bubble up during grilling, cook evenly.

Grilling Tips6. Prep kabobs smart.

Make sure ingredients are touching (but not crammed) and that onions are always placed directly over the meat. That’s how the juices and flavors flow together nicely.

Time-Saver Tip:

Soak bamboo sticks ahead of time and then put them in a bag the freezer. When you’re ready to use them, grab as many out as you need so you’re not soaking them the day you’re cooking.

7. Steaks require finesse and patience.

Once you’re finished marinating a steak, pat it dry before you start grilling.

Grilling tipsTime-Saver Tip:

Unlike burgers, steaks should be flipped as little as possible for the juiciest outcome. After pulling steaks off, let them rest for a bit so the flavors can seep in.

8. Vegetables are a whole different ballgame.

Most vegetables don’t require marinating, but they do taste best when brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with garlic salt or fresh herbs.

Time-Saver Tip:

Cut up veggies the day before so that they’re ready to go when you’re ready to grill them. Also keep this handy AllRecipes guide bookmarked on your computer for quick reference.

7 Beginner Steps to Take Before Starting Keto

You’ve heard about the keto diet. You’ve thought about the keto diet. Now you’re at a point where you’re ready to actually try the keto diet.

Hold up. Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

Before you go all-in, make sure you’re setting yourself up for success by taking the right steps.

That way, you’re not flying in blind, but rather ensuring you’re going to commit to something, see it through to the end — and reap all the benefits in between.

1. Research what you’re going to eat (and what you won’t be able to eat).

The keto diet is no joke. You’re going to be severely restricting your carbs. A proper keto diet calls for no more than 20-30 net carbs per day. That’s it. That means no more bread. No more refined sugar. No more carbs pretty much at all.

It also means your body will likely experience rapid weight loss because it will enter a ketogenic state where you will burn fats (instead of the usual carbs) to create energy. (Hence why people do it.) **

2. Rethink the whole “fat” thing.

Have you always been afraid to consume fat? Think it will make you just that — fat? You’re certainly not alone. The idea that a high-fat diet creates fat is actually not true. It’s all about the kind of fats you consume — healthy fats versus trans fats.

Going keto means you’re going to have to let go of that whole “low-fat” thing. You’re going to be eating fatty foods a lot (like a lot, a lot) — and that’s not only okay, it’s necessary to succeed. Olive oil, butter, that white part of the meat? Those are your friends.

3. Try your hand at being a chef.

One of the biggest struggles of sticking with a keto diet is boredom. There’s two ways to combat that. The first is to get creative with your cooking skills. Follow a Pinterest board dedicated to keto recipes. Google them. Check out our blog. Just keep on innovating and trying new things so you never feel over it.

The second option (and we of course think this is the best one) is to order Diet-to-Go meals. Yep, you read that correctly. We have a diet plan specifically dedicated to keto. We’ll take the thinking out of it with our fresh, tasty, pre-prepared meals. All you do is heat them up and enjoy.

4. Tell your support network.

Like we’ve said before, sticking to the keto diet can be challenging (albeit rewarding). When something in life is challenging, leaning on friends and family can mean the difference between success and failure.

Let your loved ones know what you’re doing and how you’re going to do it. Share your goals, your timelines and your plans. Most importantly, when you do succeed, be sure to celebrate with them.

5. Prep yourself for the keto flu.

One of the things about this diet that typically hits people like a sledgehammer is those first few days. Think about it. You’re forcing your body into a state it’s probably never been in, one where it gives up its normal source of fuel and trades it in for something entirely different.

While going through that change, you’re likely going to feel lethargic, tired and low-energy. You may experience mental fogginess as well, which makes it difficult to think clearly. Be sure to pick a start-date that isn’t ahead of a week of tight deadlines or big project due-dates.

6. Consider purchasing supplements.

When your body is in ketosis, the liver goes through water and electrolytes like crazy. To keep everything in check, some people find taking potassium and sodium tablets evens things out. Don’t be afraid to up the salt on your food, drink bone broth and chow down on loads of non-starchy veggies like spinach, artichoke, broccoli, cabbage, mushrooms and celery.

7. Create a follow-up plan.

Keto is great (like really great) for losing weight rapidly.** But it’s likely not a forever-thing. Once you get to where you want to be, set yourself up for lifelong success by building out a follow-up plan.

The last thing you want to do is go back to the eating habits that got you in trouble in the first place. Avoid all that madness by knowing exactly what you’re going to eat (and not eat) afterwards.

** Weight loss results may vary. Results not guaranteed.

8 Thoughts Successful People Use to Counter Negativity

There are times when self-doubt, insecurity and negative thoughts creep into our minds.

Sometimes it’s only once a week or once a day, sometimes it’s a few times a day, and sometimes, it’s multiple — heck hundreds — of time a day.

These debilitating thoughts can be crippling. They can stop us dead in our tracks. They can get in the way of us doing what we need to do. They can lead to anxiety, or depression, or worse.

But here’s the thing, our thoughts don’t have to define us. Are they going to be there? Yes. Absolutely. But do they have to make us miserable? Absolutely not.

Here are 8 thoughts the most successful people live by to counter those negative thoughts and achieve success and happiness.

1) I am responsible for what happens in my life.

Accountability is the best starting point to getting over your negative thoughts and moving on to the next step. Don’t play the victim. Every single thing that’s happened to you has happened because of choices you’ve made. This is not to say that others haven’t been responsible at certain points, too. But ultimately we must accept that every choice we’ve made — and will make — has a consequence.

2) I have the life I’m willing to have.

Think about it. If you weren’t willing to have this life, would you? You are, after all, the one living it. The point you are at in your life is because you have, either consciously or subconsciously, accepted it.

3) I am a winner.

Your mind is pre-programmed to win. Every action in your life has led you to this point, and you’ve won at getting here. You have achieved the things you’re willing to put up with — whether that’s taken the form of success or complacency. The key to winning at something different, maybe a goal you have, is to remind yourself that you will win at whatever your mind wants to win at.

4) I accept uncertainty.

You never know exactly what’s going to happen. You could get hit by a bus crossing the street tomorrow. Or you could walk into a grocery store and meet the love of your life. You just never know. Rather than fearing that uncertainty, accept it. Face it head on. Be okay with the it. In fact, embrace it. Get excited about the surprises life has in store for you. Uncertainty is the space where you experience new things, grow and learn and where life happens.

5) I am capable.

Can you handle what life throws at you? Absolutely. Every time. You’ve made it this far, through all the ups and downs, all the highs and lows. That’s because you are 100 percent capable of overcoming the odds, of taking that next step, of making it through each situation. When those negative thoughts start to creep in, remind yourself that yes, you can do this. And you will.

6) I am relentless.

Think back to the moments in your life when you’ve achieved something. What are you most proud of? Now think about HOW you achieved that success. More likely than not, you were operating outside your comfort zone. You were working hard. You were facing your fears. You were being relentless.

7) I can solve this.

Problems are an inevitable part of life. But every problem, without fail, also has a solution. Can’t see a solution? That’s only because you haven’t quite worked it out yet. Give it time. It will come to you.

8) I am not what I think. I am what I do.

Who is someone that comes to mind when you think of what success looks like? Steve Jobs? Ghandi? Martin Luther King Jr.? Abraham Lincoln? Do you think that person never had doubts, negative thoughts or fear? Of course they did! The difference between them and so many others is that they didn’t let those negative thoughts stop them. They got out of bed and took risks anyway. You will have negative thoughts. That’s a given. The key is to not let those thoughts stop you from doing what you need to do. It’s your actions that make you who you are — not what’s going on in your head.

Is CBD Safe?

CBD is a safe, non-psychoactive cannabis-derived substance. It is scientifically proven to have milder side effects than regular medications. Besides, even very high CBD doses (1,500 mg per day) don’t cause your body any harm.

But from a legal perspective, CBD might not be safe. The matter is that the US government allows only CBD products with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content of 0.3% or lower. Due to this, you have to buy CBD from reliable lab-tested CBD brands like HempFusion (its products contain 0% THC).

How to Buy CBD Products

The CBD market still remains mostly unregulated. Because of this, you might encounter unreliable CBD brands selling placebo or poor-quality products. Therefore, you have to be careful and take into account these brand and product features while buying CBD oil:

  • Certifications and lab test results
  • Hemp source. American or European hemp is preferred
  • Reputation. Always check for brand reviews
  • Extraction method (CO2 is preferred)
  • CBD potency

13 Years Later, Martha Maintained a 75-Pound Weight Loss

Martha Pauly

Name: Martha Pauly
Age: 67
Occupation: Retired social worker
Meal Plan: Balance
Favorite Meal: Blackened Salmon
Start-date: September 2008
Starting weight: 225
Height: 5’9”
Pounds Lost: 75
Activity Level: Kayaking, dancing
When I get a craving, my go-to trick is: I go to the grocery store and I’ll buy one slice of carrot cake. And I can do that periodically, and I’m fine.
My favorite app for tracking weight loss is: I used a scale the whole time. Back when I started, I weighed myself every day, and as it slowed, I’d cut back to weighing myself once a week or twice a week.

When Martha Pauly, a single mom of two, worked as a social worker in Virginia, her life was always busy and on the go. She’d often find herself inspecting facilities at odd hours.

“I was starving because I’d work right through lunch, so what did I do?” Martha said. “I would go right through the drive-thrus. I wasn’t going to make lunch. I didn’t want to go shopping.”

That was back in 2008, and the poor meal choices caused Martha’s weight to creep up to 225 pounds.

“I found Diet-to-Go, and I loved that they were local,” Martha said. “I loved the meals because I could go through lunch and then go to the office and heat it up in 3 minutes — drive right past the drive-thru.”

Martha said the meals were quite the change from frozen grocery store meals she’d tried.

“Diet-to-Go meals were so good and so filling, which was not my experience with frozen,” Martha said. “I’d eat one of those and go, ‘Ok now where’s my meal?’”

Martha said the quality of the meals and the fact that they were nutritious and filling helped her stick with the program, shedding 75 pounds over the course of a couple years.

“At first [the weight] just fell off,” Martha said. “Then the body gets used to it. If it wasn’t a whole pound, it was part of a pound. It was slow and steady from there, and that worked.”

Martha said it was also empowering when her friends and colleagues noticed. “The way my job was, I had to go inspect a day care every 6 months, and then I’d walk in, and they’d go, ‘OMG you look fabulous,’” Martha said. “I got that a lot, even to the point where someone asked me if I was okay.

“With my friends, it was gradual. Finally someone said to me, ‘Wow. Where did your butt go?’ And that part was really nice. Plus, I just feel better.”

Plus, the program was simple, and it was something she actually liked.

“In addition to being healthy, it’s good portion control for me,” she said. “I don’t have to cook it, shop for it, or fix it. It’s been a wonderful answer. And the way the program has evolved, I love the substitutions. It’s very flexible.”

Martha has stuck with Diet-to-Go since 2008, and she credits it with also helping her tastes change, too.

“I don’t want fat as much,” she said. “I don’t want sugar because I’m not used to having it anymore. My stomach shrank and that makes a difference, so I eat less. So it doesn’t take that much to fill me anymore.”

Even through hardship, Diet-to-Go was there. When Martha’s 30-year-old son passed away in 2016 through a condition he was born with and through no fault of his own, she gained 20 pounds.

“I got rid of the weight again very quickly, and that was just with Diet-to-Go meals,” she said.

Martha said she’s “not a fan” of gyms and working out, but she has been able to do fun activities such as kayaking, country line dancing and walking her dog.

“I’m not a skinny mini, and I’m not planning to be,” Martha said. “I just want to be healthy, and I am now.”

It’s a Marathon: Lauren’s 40-Pound Weight Loss Comes From the Right Mindset

Name: Lauren Vaz
Age: 40
Occupation: Senior procurement manager
Meal Plan: Balance
Favorite Meal: Asian Meatballs
Start-date: January 2020
Height: 5’6”
Starting Weight: 199
Pounds Lost: 40
Goal Weight: 150
Activity Level: Daily walks, hiking, roller skating
When I get a craving, my go-to trick is: Drinking water. I use my Tritan Water Bottle to remind me to drink water almost every hour. If I feel like I’m hungry, I’m probably just thirsty. If I’m still hungry after drinking the water, I eat a sugar-free Jello or cucumbers.
My favorite app for tracking weight loss is: Fitbit

Finding lasting, long-term success when it comes to weight loss isn’t something that happens overnight — it’s a marathon, not a sprint. That’s the message Lauren Vaz wants to send, and it’s a mindset she’s embraced whole-heartedly when it comes to her own weight loss success.

Lauren started on her Diet-to-Go journey in January 2020 and has steadily lost 40 pounds over the course of a year, reaching her goal of 40 by age 40.

“You just have to have it in your mind that it is a marathon,” Lauren said. “Once you get that…you hit your goals over time, [and] then you understand.”

Lauren, a full-time senior procurement manager and mother of two little girls, said she came to that realization whole-heartedly over the last year as she worked to shed the weight by eating Diet-to-Go’s healthy, nutritious Balance Plan meals.

Over the holidays, for example, Lauren adjusted her mindset to maintenance mode so she could enjoy the occasional dinner with her family and friends.

“What I planned to do over the holidays was maintenance,” Lauren said. “I wanted to get through the holidays and not GAIN weight, and I successfully did that.”

“I kept eating my Diet-to-Go food. I didn’t go crazy,” she added. “I enjoyed eating food when I went to my parent’s house. I had Thanksgiving dinner. I tried to make sure I didn’t go overboard.”

Once the holidays were over, Lauren got right back on track, sticking with her Diet-to-Go meals and daily walks.

“It can’t be all or nothing, because then I won’t do it,” Lauren said. “I want to make sure I’m enjoying life.”

Lauren also makes sure she has measures in place to ensure she doesn’t let the COVID-19 pandemic and working from home become an excuse to munch mindlessly and gain weight.

“I strategically do not buy foods that I would snack on,” Lauren said. “I don’t grocery shop. I send my husband with a list, and he never deviates from the list. We don’t buy chips. I love candy and cakes and sweets, but my kids aren’t into it. So, we don’t buy it.”

Making sure to eat at specific times is also key, Lauren said.

“I eat my breakfast, I eat my lunch. I make my dinner,” she said.

And, since Lauren struggles with a tendency to late-night snack, she uses the trick of going upstairs in the evening.

“I just stay up there, and then my husband brings me tea,” she said. “And, if I really want something, I may eat some diet ice cream.”

Lauren’s persistence and patience has paid off. She recently returned from a trip to Maui where she was able to wear a dress she hadn’t worn since 2004, as well as walk on the beach comfortably in a swimsuit.

“I was a size 16 when I started, and the dress is a size 10,” she said. “It was awesome. … I’ve got all these new bathing suits I got to wear, too. Before I used to wear cover ups … and I never wore them. I just wore my bathing suit and a pair of shorts. I don’t need coverups anymore. I brought them, but I never used them. … It was so great to walk on the beach and feel so great.”

Lauren said her hope is that others set reasonable expectations and be kind to themselves.

“I see people get discouraged — everyone’s journey is going to be different,” she said. “You’re going to hit plateaus. But you just have to see it through. Nothing feels as great as when you can get into that outfit that you couldn’t wear for so many years, and you feel so good about yourself.”

Junk Food Addiction Is a Thing – Here Are 6 Ways to Overcome It!

Junk Food

If you’ve ever felt like you’re legitimately powerless to stop eating junk food, even that it’s a compulsion, you’re not alone.

In fact, a recent study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience found solid evidence that junk food may actually be addictive. Researchers at Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter, Florida gave a group of rats an unlimited amount of junk food items like pound cake, candy bars and bacon. The rats continued to eat and gain weight, so much so that even when they were shocked on their feet, they kept eating. And, perhaps even more startling, the rats refused to eat for two weeks when the junk food was taken away.

Meanwhile, the control group of rats that was fed a healthy diet stopped eating when they received the shock and didn’t gain much weight.

The research suggests that not only do people gain weight when they eat copious amounts of junk food, but it may even change the chemical balance in their brains, causing them to feel compelled to eat it in a way similar to addiction.

“The new study…explains what happens in the brains of these animals when they have easy access to high-calorie, high-fat food,” said study author Scripps Research Associate Professor Paul J. Kenny. “It presents the most thorough and compelling evidence that drug addiction and obesity are based on the same underlying neurobiological mechanisms. In the study, the animals completely lost control over their eating behavior, the primary hallmark of addiction. They continued to overeat even when they anticipated receiving electric shocks, highlighting just how motivated they were to consume the palatable food.”

So if you find yourself unable to resist that bag of potato chips or those cookies, is there anything you can do to fight it?

You bet.

Below are 6 ways to overcome a junk food addiction and get your health back on track.

1) Acknowledge you have an issue.

The first step to recovery from any addition is to recognize it’s a thing. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but rather something to understand and accept so that you can take the proper steps to change it.

2) Identify your triggers.

Think about what habits you have that lead you to the junk food. Are there certain mitigating factors that make you want to eat junk food? What are they? Can you write them down? Common ones include loneliness, stress or work. Knowing what your triggers are can help you remove them, or at the very least, understand them when they arise.

3) Make a plan.

Your most successful endeavors in life are likely often ones that were pre-planned. That goes for overcoming a junk food addiction, too. Write out which steps you need to take to beat it, such as not eating after 8 p.m. or committing to not eating potato chips for a week.

4) Get rid of the junk food.

If it’s there, right in front of you, that’s going to make it all the more difficult to control yourself from eating it. Get out a garbage bag and throw away all the chips, cookies, candy, etc. that are sitting in your cupboard. Removing the temptation is a big assist in defeating the problem once and for all.

5) Track your progress.

Whether you prefer a food journal or a calorie-tracking app, be sure to log everything you’re eating daily so you can identify any successes, as well as the areas you can improve. You might also consider weighing yourself weekly and keeping track of any progress in that area as well, which can be extremely motivating, especially if you see those pounds come off.

6) Celebrate yourself.

Whether you lose weight or not, there’s a good chance you’ll start to feel a lot better when you cut back on the junk food. That is definitely something to celebrate! Get yourself a massage, buy yourself something, or go for a night out. Treating yourself is an important part of maintaining the motivation to keep moving forward.
